Wedding Inspiration - Dancing Shoes

June 20, 2014

I just love this idea from seller Dinks.

Why not treat your guests to a pair of dancing shoes, get them to ditch their heels and get on the dancefloor. Simply pick up a selection of thrifty flip flops from somewhere like Primark and display in this customised 'dancing shoes' crate, which is available on our preloved marketplace for just £15.

Buy now >> here.

I don't think this will be for sale for very long.

This and That - Notes from a Seller

June 18, 2014

One of the reasons that I set up Sell My Wedding was to sell on my own wedding items. Since the website launched I have sold a number of items, mirrored centrepeices, pasminas, hats, bridesmaid dresses, decor, signs, vintage crockery - the list goes on.

As a seller here are some of my hints and tips, that I have learnt along the way.

Price

If you want a quick sale - price the item accordingly. Remember that it is a used item, as a rule half the original price is a good starting point. Also, think what you would pay if you were the buyer. Is a handmade item that you made worth the same amount as an item made by a professional?

Nearest Offer

We have just added a nearest offer feature so that buyers know whether you are open to offers!

Reduce for a quick sale

If you reduce the item, why not list it again so that it appear at the top of our listings, with the title, Reduced!

Be honest

Be very honest about any marks, flaws or cracks. I had one instance with a handmade item where it was probably more rustic than the buyer had anticipated. Show all angles with lots of pictures. You can list up to seven images for each listing.

Offer free postage

If you want to keep things easy you may want to offer free postage and factor that cost into you overall price.  Use this as a selling point.

List delivery costs

State in your listing an approx postage cost, or delivery only option, so that the buyer is aware of any additional costs. Visit the Royal Mail website or pick up a leaflet so you can predict postage costs. I use my kitchen scales to weigh packages!

Don't underestimate postage costs

I have been caught out on a couple of occasions when postage has been so much more than I anticipated. As a rule I tend to post small parcels with Royal Mail and anything bigger than a shoe box size - use a courier. The most cost effective courier service I have found is My Hermes. It is also convenient as you can drop off at a local shop rather than have to wait in all day. You can also pay via PayPal and print off the address labels at home.

Packaging Costs

You need to make sure that your item is well packaged in order to make sure it arrives in one piece. If you need to buy bubble wrap, you may want to reflect this cost in your price.

Shredded paper

Shredded paper is a great and thrifty way to package up parcels.

Time to wrap

Wrapping up items can be quite time consuming - something to bear in mind!

Fragile items

When selling fragile or breakable items try to find a buyer who is willing to pick up as most couriers don't accept liability for glasswear or breakable items. I have had an incidence when items were broken in the post. In this case I reinbursed the buyer for the cost of the item. If you do post items, it may be worth having a conversation with your buyer about whether you will be happy to make refunds or whether it is at their risk.

Meet half way

On a couple of occasions, when I have sold a large amount of vintage crockery, I have arranged to meet the buyer on my way to visit friends. It is great to meet the person buying your items and I am still in contact with the buyers that I met along the way.

Visits to your home

I have had buyers visit my home to try items on. Each time I make sure that my husband is at home, just to be on the safe side.

PayPal

I prefer payments to be made via PayPal this is to protect both parties. If a buyer really wants the item they will be able to create a PayPal account. I will accept cash on pick up, but always make sure that the buyer is happy with the product before they leave.

Etiquette

Buyers - if you no longer interested in an item it is nice if you can let the seller know.

Hope you have found this useful - happy buying and selling!
