What To Include In Your Wedding Vows

Writing your wedding vows can feel like a lot of pressure. How do you put everything you feel about someone into a few paragraphs?

The good news is that your vows don't need to be perfect. They just need to sound like you.

Whether you want your vows to be emotional, funny, personal or a mixture of all three, there are a few things you can include to make them meaningful and memorable.

Start With Your Love Story

Your relationship is unique, so why not bring a little of your story into your vows?

Think about how you met, your first date, the moment you realised they were the person you wanted to spend your life with, or a funny memory that you both still talk about.

You don't need to tell your entire relationship story. Just choose one or two moments that capture what makes your relationship special.

Talk About What You Love About Them

This might sound obvious, but your vows are the perfect opportunity to tell your partner exactly what you love about them.

Perhaps it's the way they always make you laugh, how supportive they are when things get difficult, or the little things they do every day that make you feel loved.

Try to be specific. Instead of simply saying "you're kind", think about why they're kind and the moments when you've seen that side of them.

Those little details can make your vows feel much more personal.

Include a Favourite Memory

Think about a moment that perfectly sums up your relationship.

It could be a holiday you took together, an embarrassing first date, a spontaneous adventure or something completely ordinary that became special because you experienced it together.

Sharing a favourite memory can also help bring some personality into your vows, particularly if you're worried about them becoming too serious.

Make Some Promises

The promises are the heart of your wedding vows.

You can include the traditional promises of love, loyalty and support, but don't be afraid to make them personal.

You might promise to:

  • Always make time for date nights.
  • Support each other's dreams.
  • Laugh together, even when life gets difficult.
  • Be there through every new adventure.
  • Always save the last slice of pizza.
  • Keep dancing together, even when nobody else is on the dance floor.

The best promises are ones that genuinely mean something to your relationship.

Look Towards the Future

Your vows aren't just about everything you've experienced together so far. They're also about everything that's still to come.

Talk about the future you're excited to build together.

Maybe you're looking forward to travelling the world, buying your first home, starting a family, growing old together or simply enjoying all the little moments life brings.

You don't need to have everything figured out. Your vows can simply be a promise that you'll face whatever comes next together.

Don't Be Afraid to Make Them Funny

Not every part of your vows needs to be serious.

If humour is an important part of your relationship, let that come through.

A funny story, an inside joke or a light-hearted promise can make your vows feel much more natural and can help ease your nerves on the day.

Just remember that your vows will be heard by your guests too, so perhaps save the more questionable inside jokes for the two of you!

Keep Them Personal

One of the easiest ways to make your vows meaningful is to write them in your own voice.

You don't need to use elaborate language or copy something you've seen online. If you normally speak simply and casually, your vows can sound the same.

Think about what you'd actually say to your partner if you were having a heartfelt conversation together.

That's where the most genuine words usually come from.

How Long Should Wedding Vows Be?

There's no strict rule for how long your vows should be, but keeping them relatively short can make them easier to deliver on the day.

A few heartfelt paragraphs are often enough to tell your story, make your promises and look towards your future together.

Remember, you're likely to be emotional when you read them, so practising beforehand can help you feel more comfortable.

Don't Aim for Perfect

It's completely normal to feel nervous about writing your vows.

You might write several drafts, change your mind about what you want to include or stare at a blank page for far too long.

Don't worry about making every sentence sound like it belongs in a romantic film.

Your partner isn't expecting a perfect speech. They're waiting to hear your words.

Your Vows Are Yours

Your wedding vows are one of the most personal parts of your wedding day. They're your chance to celebrate your relationship, remember where you've come from and promise to be there for everything that lies ahead.

Start with your story, think about what you love about your partner, include the memories that make you smile and make promises that genuinely mean something to you.

Most importantly, write from the heart.

Years from now, it won't matter whether every sentence was perfectly written. You'll remember the person standing in front of you and the promises you made to each other. 🤍
